All Four Co-Chairs of Bernie 2020 Endorse Lt. Governor David Zuckerman in his bid for Governor of Vermont

PRESS RELEASE: May 19, 2020

All Four Co-Chairs of Bernie 2020 - Representative Ro Khanna, Senator Nina Turner, Mayor Carmen Yulin-Cruz, and Ben Cohen - Endorse Lt. Governor David Zuckerman in his bid for Governor of Vermont

BURLINGTON: Today, the Zuckerman for VT campaign announced the endorsements of all four of the Bernie 2020 campaign co-chairs: Representative Ro Khanna (D-CA), Mayor Carmen Yulin-Cruz of San Juan, Puerto Rico, Senator Nina Turner, former President of Our Revolution, and Ben Cohen, activist and co-founder of Ben and Jerry’s Ice Cream.

U.S. Representative Ro Khanna said:

“While Bernie’s campaign for president has ended, the political revolution continues with the many he has inspired. Vermont’s Lt. Governor David Zuckerman is the highest ranking Progressive in office today and is one of those people. David is not just on the frontlines of the progressive wave coming to our nation's government, he is leading the charge. I am proud to support David for Governor of Vermont and know he will not only continue fighting for our movement’s goals: economic justice, social justice, racial justice, and environmental justice, he will help young activists around the country believe that they can also run and win with Bernies’ platform as he has done time and again.”

Senator Nina Turner said:

“The “people in power” should respect the power of the people. David Zuckerman is both a person in power and part of our people-driven progressive movement. He has worked with one foot in the office and the other giving a voice to all communities. David is constantly seeking to connect with people and do what few politicians do: listen. He leads with the people’s voice and fights to ensure justice for all.  He will work to empower all of our voices as the next Governor of Vermont.”

Mayor Cruz said:

“We have less than 10 years to address the climate crisis if we are going to leave this planet healthy and habitable for generations to come. We need leaders across the United States and throughout the world who not only believe in science but will take the significant and necessary steps to create a safe future for all of us. David Zuckerman has been fighting for our climate for over thirty years, first as a student activist, then as a legislator and organic farmer, and presently as the Lieutenant Governor of Vermont. The future of our planet depends on leaders like him.”

Ben Cohen, co-founder of Ben and Jerry’s ice cream, said:

“As an ice cream guy, I have met a lot of people and a lot of farmers. David is one of the best of both. As a farmer and a progressive leader, he understands agricultural and small business issues, the complex challenges of water quality, the importance of a livable wage, and that we must urgently address the climate crisis. I have supported David over the years as he has worked for Vermont farmers, small businesses and families. I have also gotten to know him personally as the incredibly kind, thoughtful, and dedicated person he is. I am proud to join my fellow Bernie 2020 co-chairs in endorsing him to be Vermont's next Governor.”

In response to the endorsements, Lt. Governor David Zuckerman said:

“I want to thank Representative Khanna, Senator Turner, Mayor Cruz and Mr. Cohen for their support and endorsements. It means the world to me to have the four co-chairs of the Bernie Sanders presidential campaign standing with me as I run to be Vermont’s next Governor.  In 1992, when I first heard Bernie Sanders speak, I was inspired by the fact that he was an honest politician who said what he believed, didn’t play games, and lived his values. To this day, I consider him my mentor and follow his example in running grassroots campaigns, reaching out to folks on all sides of the spectrum, and doing what is right even when it’s not popular. Economic, social, racial, and environmental justice demand such leadership.”
