Zuckerman Endorsed by Labor
BURLINGTON: Lt. Governor David Zuckerman received an important early endorsement in his bid for governor from the Vermont Labor Council of the AFL-CIO today.
President David Van Deusen said, “The Vermont Labor Council of the AFL-CIO has endorsed David Zuckerman at our earliest opportunity because we need a governor who has a vision for a stronger and more resilient Vermont, one with good jobs, adequate wages and protections for workers. David Zuckerman understands that organized labor helps all working people to get decent wages and benefits.
It is not often that we have the opportunity to support a candidate that we have worked with and who has fought for us on our issues for so long. David Zuckerman has been a strong supporter of labor since his first appearance in the Vermont House of Representatives in 1997. He was vocal about the need for a $15 minimum wage and paid family leave many years before these issues were popular. He has always supported the right to organize and he has shown up at picket lines and rallies for many Vermont unions over the years, whether he was running for office at the time or not. He has earned our support.”
The AFL-CIO is Vermont’s second largest union, representing 10,000 members. The Zuckerman campaign and the Vermont Labor Council of the AFL-CIO shared this major endorsement on International Workers’ Day as both the Lt. Governor and Union members head to a car parade to recognize and thank essential workers. This May Day event, organized by Migrant Justice, will commence in the Staples Plaza in South Burlington at 12:30pm today and proceed past the UVM Medical Center, Edmunds Middle School, City Market, the Vermont Department of Labor, the Chittenden Regional Correctional Facility, and Hannaford supermarket. All participants will wear masks and practice social distancing.
Lt. Governor Zuckerman replied to the endorsement by thanking the AFL-CIO for their work on behalf of their members and all Vermont workers: “I am honored to be endorsed by the VT Labor Council, AFL-CIO. They have consistently been a strong and effective advocate for their members; nurses, teachers, building trades and municipal workers, and for the well being of all Vermont workers. Their work keeps our hospitals, our towns, our state and our country moving forward and thriving. I look forward to continuing our work together.”
